We’re girls, we’re women, and they don’t have it easy in the coffee world. That’s why we started Chicas Industry and started bringing coffee directly from farmers and women farmers. Sometimes it’s a struggle because the fairer sex is scarce in this business, but it’s even more of a struggle for the women farmers themselves, which is why we support them as much as possible. We are trying to find more and more women farmers to work with. One of them is Ana Lucía Urbano, a determined farmer from the Huila region. This year, for the first time, we have imported her organic certified traditionally washed coffee and it certainly won’t be the last time!

What Ana told us about herself and her project:

My name is Ana Lucía Urbano Pena, I am proud to be a farmer and a single mother. In the 34 years that I have been working with this beautiful product, I have already achieved many victories, such as raising my children and grandchildren. In addition, as a farmer, I am part of several groups made up of women entrepreneurs in this industry in the southern part of the Huila region, some of which I even lead. We work together with them to expand our knowledge in coffee cultivation. This collaboration also helps us in improving the economics of our projects and better providing for our families.

About the coffee

In coffee cultivation, we focus on reducing our ecological footprint while ensuring excellent quality. For this reason, our company has always strived to support environmental care because, as a mother, grandmother, and woman, I want future generations to enjoy the place I call home. Therefore, our project also includes a 23-hectare forest, which is incredibly important for biodiversity and for connecting with other reserves in our region.

Thanks to these ecological practices, fair working conditions for our employees, and our exceptional quality, our brand holds five prestigious certifications recognized worldwide.

This lot is a blend of the traditional Caturra variety and the Castillo Tambo variety. The latter is a local mutation of the Castillo variety, “discovered” near the town of Tambo in the Cauca region a few years ago. Genetically, it is almost identical, but in flavor, it is slightly sweeter than the classic Castillo.

This variety is processed using the traditional washed method. During the coffee harvest, the focus is primarily on ripe cherries. The lower-quality fruits are removed through a process known as “floating.” The coffee cherries are then depulped and fermented for about 16 hours. After fermentation, they are washed and dried.
