Argenys Rojas Hoyos was born and raised in the Vereda Pantanos of Timaná, Huila. Her parents were laborers, but her father decided to stop working for others and began cultivating coffee on a 3-hectare plot inherited by her mother. Despite extreme poverty, the family worked hard, starting with 4,000 coffee trees and gradually expanding the farm by purchasing additional land.

Argenys grew up helping on the farm, often working after school under challenging conditions, such as grinding coffee by hand and working by candlelight due to the lack of electricity. After her father tragically took his own life in 1998, her older brother took over the farm, but he too passed away in a traffic accident in 2000. Despite these hardships, Argenys completed her education, studying law at night while working during the day.

Her determination to become a lawyer stemmed from a personal injustice her family faced, and she eventually achieved her goal, becoming an attorney and specializing in public law. Alongside her legal career, Argenys remained deeply connected to the farm, which she and her siblings continued to expand and improve.

Challenges and Aspirations
Despite facing significant challenges, including financial struggles and even being a victim of a crime, Argenys remains determined. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public law and hopes to start a doctorate in the future.

The family’s goal is to find partners who believe in their coffee and help them achieve their dream of direct export. With their dedication, quality coffee, and strong family bond, they are ready to share their story and coffee with the world.

About the farm

The Los Andes farm, now 18 hectares, has grown significantly since its humble beginnings. The family has planted 17,000 coffee trees, which are now in production. In 2020, their coffee won first place in the Yara Champions Cup with a score of 86.47, showcasing its exceptional quality.

The farm is a family effort, with Argenys and her siblings working together to produce high-quality coffee. They are involved in every step of the process, from growing to selling roasted and ground coffee directly to customers. Their dream is to export their coffee without intermediaries, sharing their passion and quality with the world.

The processing of this coffee begins in the field, where the soil is fertilized and cleaned based on thorough analysis. Only ripe cherries are harvested, which then undergo floating to remove defective beans. The cherries are left whole for 20 hours, then depulped without the use of water, and the beans remain in the mucilage for 80 to 100 hours, allowing for sugar concentration and the development of sweet flavors. After washing, the coffee is dried in a covered drying facility with controlled temperatures not exceeding 37°C and regulated airflow. The finished coffee is carefully stored in natural fiber bags to maintain its purity and prevent the absorption of unwanted odors. The entire process is carried out without the use of chemical additives, emphasizing traditional methods and fermentation to enhance the coffee’s natural character.
