Asocafé Tatamá was officially founded in 2012 in response to the numerous challenges faced by coffee farmers. We realized that only through collective effort could we find solutions to these difficulties. The association started with 100 members and was officially registered with the Chamber of Commerce in February of the same year. The first step taken by the executive board was to participate in a Ministry of Agriculture project called ALIANZAS PRODUCTIVAS. The project passed the first phase but was halted in the second phase due to a lack of experience. The following year, we resubmitted the project, this time with successful results. This allowed the organization to establish its own revolving fund, enabling us to provide low-interest loans to our members so they could improve their farms.
One of the organization’s main objectives was to commercialize the coffee produced by our members. In 2016, we decided the time was right, and with the support of the municipal government, which provided us with warehouse space, and with limited funds from the revolving fund, we began collecting the finest coffees from our members and offering them to potential clients. The Canadian non-profit organization Socodevi supported us by equipping a laboratory and providing specialized personnel who trained us in cupping, quality assessment, and trading. Additionally, we registered our own coffee brand, PERLA DORADA. Thanks to significant support from the governor of Risaralda, we are now building our own coffee roastery, and our next goal is to open a specialty coffee shop in our city. It is important to highlight that this project is 100% managed by the producers themselves, without private capital involvement. This makes the process more challenging but also more admirable. Seeing producers actively seek to add value to their product is truly inspiring.
Today, Asocafé Tatamá consists of 95 affiliated coffee-producing families, located at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,900 meters above sea level. They cultivate varieties such as Castillo, Caturro, and Supremo. Many of these families still rely on traditional methods, such as sun-drying, and hope to find customers willing to pay a fair price for their work, allowing them to achieve sustainability in their business.
The Asocafé Tatamá logo pays tribute to our greatest treasure—the Tatamá National Natural Park, one of the few untouched parks in the world, free from human impact. Our logo features its majestic mountains and an endemic frog species from the region holding coffee beans as a symbol. This represents not only economic sustainability but also environmental responsibility. It is also important to mention that our logo was designed by the son of one of our members.
Asocafé Tatamá has established itself as the most influential coffee organization in the region, continuously working for the benefit of its members, who remain its core mission and purpose.
The Asocafé blend is a mix of traditional coffee varieties such as Castillo, Caturra, and Colombia. It embodies the flavor profile of coffees from our region. The coffees were grown in areas adjacent to the Tatamá National Natural Park. Through a washed process with approximately 40 hours of fermentation, we achieve the unique character of this regional coffee from Santuario. The farms producing this blend are located at an altitude of over 1600 meters above sea level.
