Mexico

Our desire to discover new coffee countries took us to Mexico.

Mexico is an incredibly huge country, with coffee regions far apart from each other. We looked at Oaxaca, Veracruz and Hidalgo. The coffee from these areas are almost without exception traditionally grown. The farms are family-run, smaller in size compared to Brazil (2-10 hectares) and the harvesting is done by hand, not by machine. It is therefore harvested once a year, roughly from January to May, and the season is not as concentrated as in other coffee destinations.

The coffee culture is only slowly taking off in Mexico, and this is another challenge for us. The logistics here are not very well established, the coffee farms are really far apart and the dry mills with export licence can be counted on one hand. But the level of coffee processing, along with other fermentations, has honestly surprised us. New generations of farmers are bringing both new processes and exotic varieties of coffee trees to the Mexican coffee culture. Geisha is no exception.

Farmers process the beans both by natural method and washed and honey.

We started our project in 2022 with two specific settlements, Tlaxiaco and Mirador in the Oaxaca region. In the beginning, we focused on microlots from smaller family farms that we visited and where we could taste the coffee. The quality of the coffees is easily on par with those from Colombia. The farmers process the beans using both the natural method and the washed and honey method.

In early 2023, we visited Mexico again and we were looking for other coffee regions. We visited numerous coffee farms and met more amazing coffee people and this time, in addition to the state of Oaxaca, we visited the states of Veracruz and Hidalgo. Veracruz is a coffee state, coffee export is a long tradition here. The center around which everything revolves is the mountain town of Coatepec, where coffee trees, small but also megalomaniac farms are simply stumbled upon at every corner. Beekeeping is also a big tradition here, which goes hand in hand with coffee growing.

In the state of Hidalgo, we focused on just one area and one association. It is the association of women farmers and their families, Las Adelitas. We have fallen in love with this beautiful project and have set up a great collaboration in 2023.
